A Day in the Life of an Arizona Rancher: Border Fences, Illegal Aliens, and One Man’s Watchtower
By Janice Kephart and Bryan Griffith
CIS Video, March 2011
http://cis.org/Videos/ArizonaRancher

Description: Richard Humphries, a lifelong Arizona resident and former narcotics cop living thirty miles north of the southeast Arizona border in Cochise County, became concerned enough with illegal activity on his land to build a watchtower to help himself and federal law enforcement track illegal aliens on his 75 acre ranch. This film relates Mr. Humphries’ humane approach to curbing illegal immigration in his own words, chronicling stories about a 150 mile car chase of an illegal alien load; a close call at his front gate; a thirsty and scared woman who had lost her coyote; and a rancher’s view of the Border Patrol tasked with interdicting illegal aliens across a still-porous border.

Like Nike, States Just Do It!
By James R. Edwards Jr.
CIS Blog, March 13, 2011
http://cis.org/edwards/states-just-do-it

Excerpt: Though some things may take an act of Congress, as the old saying goes, the states remain the laboratories of democracy. And lately, much of the democracy in action dealing with the adverse consequences of immigration overload has occurred in state legislatures.

One of the World's Smallest Navies Thwarts Illegal Entries to the U.S.
By David North
CIS Blog, March 13, 2011
http://cis.org/north/bahamas-navy-haitians

Excerpt: It is one of the world's tiniest navies, yet it is doing an effective job of preventing illegal entries to the U.S.

And, no, it does not carry the U.S. flag, and it may not even get any U.S. government funds.

The entity is the Royal Bahamas Defense Force (BDF), which is the army, navy, and air force of the Bahamas, all wrapped into a single organization.

In Two Weeks, 295 Apprehensions in the Ajo SBInet Sector
By Janice Kephart
CIS Blog, March 11, 2011
http://cis.org/kephart/sbinet-2-weeks-295-apprehensions

Excerpt: In the past two weeks, the Ajo Border Patrol sector has publicized its apprehension of three large groups of illegals totaling 295 individuals using video operators and surveillance systems. These catches represent abnormally high numbers of illegals in single groupings crossing the desert before the heat of spring rolls in.

Columnist Laments Mexico's Double Standard
By Jerry Kammer
CIS Blog, March 10, 2011
http://cis.org/kammer/mexicos-double-standard-carbonell

Excerpt: An opinion column in today's El Universal, the Mexico City daily, criticizes Mexican judicial authorities and Mexican society in general for failing to respond to the rampant kidnapping of migrants passing through on their way to the U.S. border.

A Slip? Deliberate? USCIS Positions English Document in Second Place
By David North
CIS Blog, March 10, 2011
http://cis.org/north/english-first-or-second

Excerpt: I am not an English language zealot.

I do not mind the occasional translation of a government document that deals with a limited-English population being translated into another tongue. Emergency signs, for example, in two languages are probably useful to both English speakers and speakers of the other language.

But if a U.S. government agency is going to print something in two languages, should not the English version appear first? Above, rather than below; and on the left side of the page, rather than the right? (We read from left to right.)

I would think so, but maybe USCIS does not.

Why Do Black Congressmen Vote Against Limiting Immigration?
By David North
CIS Blog, March 9, 2011
http://cis.org/north/black-congressman-and-immigration

Excerpt: It is generally agreed that the people hurt most, economically, by both illegal immigration and massive legal immigration are those at the bottom of the labor market; and many in that part of the labor market are blacks.

Why then do black members of the House routinely vote and speak against measures that would limit immigration, and thus free up more (and better) jobs for their black constituents? Just last week I witnessed this pattern in action when both Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), and Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) vehemently berated pro-restrictionist witnesses at a House immigration subcommittee hearing.

And the Oscar for Uninformed Immigration Commentary Goes to ... the Dairy Farmer from Utah
By David Seminara
CIS Blog, March 9, 2011
http://cis.org/seminara/oscar-for-uninformed-immigration-commentary

Excerpt: ill Wright, a dairy farmer turned state representative from Utah who is the architect of Utah's half-baked plan to create a guest worker program for illegal immigrants, is my nominee for this year's least-informed immigration policymaker. True, the year is young, and there are scores of legislators who know very little about immigration dabbling in the issue, but I doubt any will be able to top Wright's performance on NPR Monday night for shear, willful ignorance.

Secure Border Initiative Proves Itself Again
By Janice Kephart
CIS Blog, March 8, 2011
http://cis.org/kephart/SBInet-proves-itself-again

Excerpt: Once again, like it did two weeks ago, the Border Patrol is hyping the contribution of technology to apprehending groups that otherwise may have gone undetected. And yes, SBInet is still operational where it was deployed, despite the widespread notion that the light switch was turned off on both the Tucson and Ajo sectors due to cancellation. The reason SBInet is still operating is because it works. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano admitted it still works, and that decided to cancel it because it does not solve enough border problems. I'm wondering which border problems, exactly, she is concerned about? I always conceived that 'operational control of the border' entailed the ability to detect, track, and apprehend illegal aliens.

State OKs Migration of Same-Sex Partners, But for Diplomats Only
By David North
CIS Blog, March 8, 2011
http://cis.org/north/same-sex-partners-for-diplomats

Excerpt: The U.S. State Department has quietly made it legal for some Americans to migrate their alien same-sex partners to the U.S. – but it has done so only for diplomats.

Utah Legislative Leaders & Special Interests Force Through Amnesty/Guestworker Program
By Ronald W. Mortensen
CIS Blog, March 8, 2011
http://cis.org/mortensen/utah-guestworker-amnesty

Excerpt: Illegal immigration has been a central focus of the current Utah legislative session.

Immediately after the Arizona enforcement bill was signed into law, state Rep. Stephen Sandstrom indicated that he would introduce enforcement legislation in the 2011 legislature and the proposal drew overwhelming public support.

The Very Model of a Modern Illegal Alien?
By James R. Edwards Jr.
CIS Blog, March 7, 2011
http://cis.org/edwards/model-illegal-alien

Excerpt: Immigration and Customs Enforcement shares responsibility for the death of a nun and two others' injury in Prince William County, Va., last year. The internal ICE report on the matter, which it took a Freedom of Information Act demand to make public, points the finger squarely at ICE for the release of illegal alien Carlos Martinelly Montano, who stands accused of manslaughter while driving under the influence. The public interest legal watchdog Judicial Watch pursued the FOIA action, and its contents were picked up in the media.
