Here's an email interview with Andrew Ferguson of CodeOrigami.com.
> 1. Please describe Code Origami, i.e., what the software does, its competitive advantages, target audience, etc.
[AF] The InfoRazor Server product by Code Origami, helps law firms, health care organizations, insurance companies, in-fact anyone dealing with PDF documents of a sensitive nature remove information they do not want the general public to see. This list could include government, Police, etc. In the case of law firms, this could be Witness names and addresses. For health care organizations, this could be patient details, like names and illness details. For Insurance companies, this could be details of an accident, or personally identifiable information of those claiming. Removing this information is termed Redaction in the Legal space.
Traditionally Redaction occurs by providing a list of phrases to remove from the document to an employee who searches for each occurrence and manually marks them for removal with a software tool for electronic documents, or black tape for paper documents. InfoRazor Server works like an extra employee by having the user compose an email to the product's email address, with the PDF's attached, and a list of phrases to remove as the body. The user sends the email and receives the resulting document back a few moments later in their Inbox.
> 2. What inspired you to create this product?
[AF] I have worked as a software developer for a large International firm for the past 12 years and architected their Redaction solution around 9 years ago. This was a time when documents were predominantly "scanned images". Now the market has shifted more towards electronic documents, I saw the need to create a new approach.
> 3. Code Origami can help attorneys who use or send PDFs. Walk us through how law firms or paralegals or attorneys can use this software.
[AF] In a common scenario in today's firms, a lawyer will walk over to a paralegal, or law clerk, with a stack of documents and a list of terms to Redact. The paralegal will then set about the task of Redacting them. This can be hundreds or thousands of documents, and can cost between $5-$10 per document. With InfoRazor Server, the lawyer would write an email with the list of phrases to Redact in the body and the PDF(s) attached. The user then simply sends the email. InfoRazor Server monitors it's Inbox for jobs and when one arrives, searches and automatically redacts the phrases within the documents, before sending the processed documents back to the user. The user will receive the processed Documents as new email in their Inbox along with a report on what was done. This can serve as an audit.
Because this uses email, a user could potentially create many jobs on their laptop on the train, and then receive and review the results on a smartphone while having coffee.
> 4. Please walk us through how health care organizations can use Code Origami, too.
[AF] Health care organizations would essentially use the same process. When a document containing sensitive information needs to be released to a 3rd party, the employee would open the original document and copy/paste the client's name, address and ailment details into the body of an email. They would then attach the PDF/s to the email and send it to the server. It will return a few moments later, Redacted, with a report of what was found.
> 5. How does Code Origami transform the way law firms or health care organizations handle PDFs?
[AF] Currently many organizations deal with Redacting PDFs by converting the pages to be redacted to Images first, and then redacting them using Imaging Tools. This loses a lot of clarity from the original document, as well as removing it's search-ability. PDFs are notoriously difficult to edit as they are multi-layered. InfoRazor Server helps organizations make their documents secure while retaining their clarity, and also saves them money in processing costs
> 6. Walk us through a situation where Code Origami would be an ideal choice for a law firm or health care organization.
[AF] Court Rooms who produce transcript to the public at the end of a day's hearing can use this software to Redact Witness names, etc.
> 7. Why is this software better than the status quo?
[AF] The status quo requires a user to manually locate areas to be redacted, and then drawing boxes around each one. This is more time consuming, and therefore costly, and more prone to human error.
> 8. What additions do you plan to include for new versions of Code Origami?
[AF] Our roadmap includes adding support for other types of documents, including MS Office, as well as more intelligent ways to locate the information to be removed.
> 9. What other groups can or should use this software?
[AF] Groups this software applys to include:
- Law Firms
- Court Rooms and Transcript Companies
- Hospitals and Doctor's Surgeries
- Government Departments
- Police Force
- Insurance Companies
- Forensic Accounting
- "Deal Rooms"
> 10. Finally, how does pricing for Code Origami compare to other products for the same audience?
[AF] Most competing products require a license to Adobe Acrobat Pro on each Desktop. InfoRazor Server requires no extra software on the client machine. It uses your standard Email Client and a free PDF Reader. InfoRazor Server licensing starts at $499 per user, or $2,800 for Unlimited users.
