Moriah Society: Building a Meaningful Legacy

The Moriah Society is made up of Jewish men and women in the real estate and building industries who are dedicated to making a lasting difference in the lives of our students. Since its inception, the Moriah Society has raised more than $5 million for American Jewish University.

Among its many programs is the annual golf tournament, now in its 19th year, which will be held at Valencia Country Club on November 1st. The funds raised at this event will provide scholarships to AJU's MBA School of Nonprofit Management for qualified ethnic minority individuals working in the nonprofit world.

Rabbinic Management Institute A Groundbreaking Executive Leadership Program for Rabbis

AJU's School of Nonprofit Management is partnering with the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies and the Rabbinical Assembly to create the Rabbinic Management Institute (RMI), a visionary program for Conservative rabbis. The curriculum is designed to give rabbis the opportunity to engage in deep, applied, educational and professional development in nonprofit management, focusing on issues crucial to the daily work of rabbis in the twenty-first century, such as marketing and public relations, fund development, nonprofit law, budget and finance of nonprofit organizations, strategic planning and negotiation and conflict resolution.

The one-year Institute will commence Sunday, February 6 through February 8, 2011 and will end with another three-day seminar in February 2012, both in Los Angeles. During the year the program will continue with forty hours of online lectures, twenty hours of hevruta study with fellow participants and office hour access to RMI faculty. This structure allows for mentorship, a manageable time commitment and affordable tuition.

For additional information, contact David Singer at RMI@ajula.edu.

The Prager Rational Guard

Dennis Prager emails:

My Dear Listener:

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for responding to my invitation to “sign up” with what I call the Prager Rational Guard (aka “Dennis’s Menaces”).

I apologize for not getting back to you much sooner. Aside from not having a staff to handle mail, as you may know, I had two surgeries this past summer to finally solve my sciatica problem (and a third surgery on a finger that had developed a staph infection!). I was in quite a bit of pain for the first six months of 2010, and while I somehow did the radio show, wrote my weekly column, and travelled to all my lectures (while being wheeled through airports), I could not do much more than that.

As you presumably know, I regard the upcoming election not merely as an important election but as a referendum on America’s future.

I think that the most important action you can take in the coming days is to support any of the Republican candidates for Governor, the Senate, and House listed below. This list is by no means comprehensive, but it includes men and women who are committed to making our government smaller and, as a result, our country stronger.

By clicking on the links below (hold down the Control key and then left click buttons) you can make donations and support these candidates in a variety of ways. No contribution of money or time is too small. Even a $5 or $10 contribution to a candidate (or to several candidates) matters. Those small amounts multiplied by large numbers of contributors will make an impact. But please do act now as the election is less than two weeks away. Thank you for getting involved in these critical races.

Governor:

Tom Emmer (MN) http://www.emmerforgovernor.com/

Each of us has a role in trying to reassert the core American values – what I have labeled the American Trinity: E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust, and Liberty. My role has been to offer clarity and intellectual ammunition in this battle. I think this is very important because ultimately this is a war of ideas. For that reason I have also started Prager University on the Internet (www.prageru.com). If you have not visited Prager University, I ask you to do so and to forward the links to the five-minute video courses to as many people as possible. We have even dubbed two courses into Spanish.

I would like to be in touch with you first and foremost to help you get these ideas out both to those who share our values, but who cannot fully articulate them, and to those who do not.

I am attaching five recent columns:

For the Left, Opponents Cannot Have Decent Motives -- The Ground Zero Example

Same-Sex Marriage and the Insignificance of Men and Women

Black Murders Eight Whites; Media Blames Whites

God, Liberals, and Liberty

ABC, NPR and PBS Hosts Equate Christian and Muslim Violence

I am asking you:

1. To forward any of these and other of my articles – and Prager University courses -- to as many people as possible.

2. To donate time and money to Republican candidates.

3. To join a Prager Listener Group in your area. (In the unlikely event that there isn’t one in your area, please consider starting one.) Meeting fellow listeners is a very positive experience socially as well as politically, and you know the importance I attach to making new friends. In addition, many of these groups are highly creative. For example, some have made their own July Fourth Seders.

4. To go to my website and click on “Winning in November” (on the very top right of the page, to the right of my picture). There is no money involved, solely an attempt by my radio colleagues and myself to gather a million or more signatures to one or more of the pledges.

I am deeply grateful for your responding to my request to join with me in fighting for our country’s core values. Your doing so gives me strength to continue my work.

With warmest wishes,

Dennis

Did Jenn Sterger Want Those Pictures From Brett Favre?

I've spent my morning looking at photos of Jenn Sterger and I have come to some very profound conclusions.

I'm wondering if she wanted to receive those intimate texts from Brett Favre?

I've spent a long time looking at photos of Jenn Sterger and I am mystified at what else one would text such a lady? Brett's Little Viking might be just the ticket.

Jenn Sterger has made her whole career on her sex appeal. So why is it wrong for guys to try to relate to her in a sexual manner? Heck, I am a very religious guy, but after extensive viewing of her photos online, I want to send her photos of me.

I remember the movie director Greg Dark, who got to know dozens of actresses. Some were appalled. They said he was abandoning the lofty standards required of someone in his position.

Greg's view? What else do you do with them? Discuss Descarte?

Girls who put their sexuality first and forward will inevitably attract sex-centered attention.

On the other hand, pious Torah scholars such as myself inevitably attract lofty theological insights.

I didn't get into journalism to write about Brett Favre's private parts, and I suspect most of my colleagues would like that story ruled out of bounds.

But our ability to spike such tawdry tales ended many seasons ago. The story of whether Favre sent racy messages and pictures of what family newspapers call genitalia to a female New York Jets staffer started on the snarky sports blog Deadspin, and was soon propelled to the 50-yard line of MSM Stadium. If the sexting allegations against the veteran quarterback are true, Deadspin may have performed an admittedly distasteful public service.

Nobody has done more than me to protect journalistic standards.

Big deal, you say. What is the danger here?

The danger, as sleazy stories ooze from the depths of the Web, is that traditional news outlets will find themselves spreading unsubstantiated garbage. But in a growing number of cases -- the Enquirer's John Edwards takedown comes to mind -- the allegations unearthed by tabloids and blogs turn out to be true. While it's clearly troubling for a publication to fork over cash for trash, the condescending media elite are often forced to play catch-up.

In the end, I don't want the New York Times devoting its resources to quarterback sexting. The paper, and others like it, should investigate campaign finance abuses, dig into city contracting, cover the war in Afghanistan -- all the heavy lifting that need not concern the Deadspins of the world.

Suicidal Gay Teens VII

Luke Ford writes: Joey Kurtzman and I talk on my live cam to the thousands of suicidal gay teens who tune in to my Torah Talks each week to find out if life is worth living.

When he was just a little tyke at Beverly Hills High School, Joey Kurtzman was a suicidal gay teen. He tried so hard to deny his own nature that he forced himself to have sex with girls. Eventually, he even married a woman and lived with her for years, forcing himself night after night with pure acts of will to commit disgusting acts of heterosexual intercourse.

Today Joey Kurtzman has embraced his gay self and he’ll teach you from this week’s Torah portion on how you too can live the dream!

Suicidal gay teens! A generation at risk! What does the Torah say? Tune in to find out.

Luke Ford: Rebel Without A Shul X

Luke Ford writes:

On Torah Talk at 7pm PDT on lukeford.net, we will answer the goy Casey’s ten questions about God, we will get a review of my memoir “XXX-Communicated: A Rebel Without A Shul” from the holy Rabbi Rabbs and we’ll discuss this week’s Torah portion.

I do a lot of Torah Talks with blokes but my heart really lies with talking Torah with hot chicks, preferably hot chicks who don’t have boyfriends. Knowledge of Torah is preferred for this position but not necessary. Please email me and include your credentials (as far as hotness). lukeisback@gmail.com

Wednesday night, Oct. 6, I interview Jesse Katz, author of the 2009 memoir The Opposite Field.

Luke: “So, Jesse, when you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?”

Jesse: “A shortstop.”

“The Dodgers would’ve been my first choice even though I was in Portland, Oregon. We were hundreds of miles from a major league franchise. Being the child of Brooklynites, the Dodgers were our team.”

Luke: “You meantion early on in your book that part of your parents’ motivation to leave New York was to get away from the rhythms of Jewish life. What did you mean?”

Jesse: “More my dad than my mom. My mom grew up in a family of [secular] intellectuals. My father grew up in a more devout family, a kosher home where there were more rules…

“Living in New York, this great megalopolis of Jewish culture, there were a lot of people there like them with similar life stories and backgrounds and I think they wanted to see who they were outside of that. What they could invent on their own without living up to the expectations of family, culture, the environment.”

At no time in history has it been of more importance that the Torah man hold on to his life force and not spread it around willy nilly among the daughters of Lillith.

Please be on the look out for any women who look like this and when they ask you for the time, do not answer them.

This week’s Torah portion is Noach.

American Jewish University

A Message from University President Robert Wexler, Ph.D.

Robert Wexler, Ph.D.

Normally, I don't like to use university publications to comment on issues relating to Israeli politics or the presentation of Israel in the media. But this time I am going to make an exception. I just finished reading a current edition of Time, whose cover features a Star of David inside of which are the words, "Why Israel Doesn't Care About Peace."

The actual article includes a number of brief quotes from various Israelis who appear to be more concerned about living the good life than securing a peace agreement with the Palestinians. Now, as a very frequent visitor to Israel, I admit fully that such folks are definitely to be found-or at least it may appear that way on the surface. But what the writer fails to grasp is that many Israelis take refuge in the pleasures of today precisely because otherwise they are condemned to live constantly on the precipice-the precipice of another rocket attack, the precipice of a nuclear Iran, or the precipice of international delegitimization. Jewish Education for an Ever-Thriving People

By Miriam Heller Stern, Ph.D.
Dean of the Fingerhut School of Education

Miriam Heller Stern, Ph.D.What's the key to forging Jewish identity in the next generation of Jews? That is the $64,000 question in Jewish life today (although the stakes are arguably much higher). We are by no means the first generation of Jews to ponder this dilemma. The great Jewish intellect Simon Rawidowicz famously described the Jews as "the ever-dying people," explaining that our unceasing concern for the impending demise of the next generation is the very reason we continue to thrive.

Luke Ford's Vegetarian Journey VI

Luke Ford writes:

Vegetarianism is the last topic I ever thought I’d speak about publicly, even though I am a life-long vegetarian. I have never eaten meat or fish in my life but I’ve never thought about it much.

Luke Ford's Vegetarian Journey III

Luke Ford writes:

Even though Christianity and Judaism share the Hebrew Bible in common, they read it completely differently. Christians read it primarily for the stories, particularly the stories that they believe predict the coming of the Messiah. Jews study the Hebrew Bible particularly for the laws.

Seventh-Day Adventism emerged out of the Millerite movement of the 1830s. That was started by the preacher William Miller who said the world was coming to an end.

On what basis did he say this? Daniel 8:14: “Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.”

Using the year-day principle, 2300 days becomes 2300 years. 2300 years from 456 BCE means 1844 CE. On Yom Kippur, 1844, Jesus was supposed to come back.

He didn’t come back. Adventists asked themselves why not. They searched the Bible. They found a text in Jeremiah that said that if all Israel kept two Sabbaths, the Messiah would come. The Adventists regarded themselves as the true Israel. They are supercessionists. That’s why they don’t care about modern state of Israel. It has no religious significance to Adventists.

Luke Ford's Vegetarian Journey II

Luke Ford writes:

My vegetarianism is something that comes up in conversation almost every time I eat with people. It came up at kiddish yesterday when I asked if the cholent was vegetarian. It wasn’t.

I don’t proselytize for vegetarianism. I’m a vegetarian by habit. Yes, I think it is a good thing, but it is not something I am passionate about.

Why am I a vegetarian? Because I was raised that way. I was brought up a Seventh-Day Adventist. That’s a type of Protestant Christianity.

Let’s deconstruct the term “Seventh-Day Adventist.” The “Seventh-Day” part means that Adventists keep the Seventh day Sabbath. From sundown Friday night to sundown Saturday night is holy time. You don’t work. Now Seventh-Day Adventists are not as strict about the Sabbath as observant Jews. Seventh-Day Adventists drive on the Sabbath. They’ll turn on lights on the Sabbath. They’ll heat up food on the Sabbath, though they generally won’t cook on the Sabbath. Some Adventists will even watch TV on the Sabbath, but if they’re religious as opposed to simply cultural Adventists, they’ll only watch one of the three satellite Seventh-Day Adventist channels.

The “Adventist” part of Seventh-Day Adventist means that they believe in the imminent advent of Jesus Christ. They think he’s coming back soon and that he will take them away to Heaven. Adventists are into eschatology. That means the study of the time of the end. Adventists are into apocalyptic. Apocalyptic means the disclosure of something hidden. The apocalypse can refer to the final battle that will end all battles – Armaggedon.

Luke Ford's Vegetarian Journey

Luke Ford writes:

Vegetarianism is the last topic I ever thought I’d speak about publicly, even though I am a life-long vegetarian. I have never eaten meat or fish in my life but I’ve never thought about it much.

Until now. You’re forcing me to think, to examine my ways.

By the way, I don’t get why people always ask me, after they hear I’m vegetarian, if I eat fish.

Seventh-Day Adventists take it for granted that if you say you are a vegetarian, that you don’t eat fish.

I was raised a Seventh-Day Adventist. I was raised a vegetarian. I’ve always taken it for granted. My family is vegetarian.

Jizo and Chibi III

Lev writes:

Entrepreneurs who make a difference are inspiring: they combine a personal passion with professional success. One such person is Valerie Johns, the Founder and President of Jizo and Chibi (

www.jizoandchibi.com

), a line of Buddhist-inspired jewelery that is beautiful and spiritually authentic. The latter is a key point of distinction from other brands, since Valerie offers people something different, something better. That is, her products resonate with the culture and traditions of Buddhism while appealing to people of all interests and faiths. Her training as a therapist and author also complements her work as an entrepreneur, because she wants to help people. I know of few companies with this level of personal outreach - and sincerity! - which explains the success of her business and the accolades she enjoys from consumers worldwide. I recently had the privilege of speaking with Valerie, and I encourage readers to learn more about Jizo and Chibi.
